Factoring compared

The best factoring companies for trucking, compared on what they actually publish

Every factor says it's fast, fair and has no hidden fees. This page skips the slogans and lines up six well-known trucking factors on the same fields: advance, recourse, contract, funding speed, fuel program, new authorities and accessorials. Every entry comes from the company's own website, with the month we checked it. Where a company doesn't publish a term, the card says so.

Our partner

Where our factoring partner fits, and where it might not

When you ask us for a factoring rate, your details go to our factoring partner. Asking for a quote is free and doesn't commit you to anything: you see the rate and the terms, and you decide. If the referral turns into an account, we may earn a fee. Your rate is the same whether you came through us or not.

That doesn't make it the right factor for everyone. If you need a fuel advance at every pickup, an instant payout on weekends, or a non-recourse plan with a specific kind of cover, compare those exact terms against the cards below before you choose. A quote from our partner is one data point, and the best way to use it is to put it next to one or two others.

Our dispatch works the same with any factor. You approve every load, the broker sends the rate con to you, and you send your paperwork to whichever factor you use. We don't require you to factor at all, and we never require a particular company.

Side by side

Six trucking factoring companies, same fields on every card

Filter by what matters to you. "Not published" means we couldn't find that term on the company's own site, not that it doesn't exist; it means you should ask. Terms change, so check the link on each card before you rely on it.

You'll notice almost no one publishes a fee percentage. That's normal in this business: the rate depends on your volume, your brokers and the options you pick, so factors quote it one carrier at a time. For the ranges trade press reports, and how flat and tiered pricing compare, see our page on freight factoring rates.

You'll also notice that "non-recourse" shows up on four of the six cards. The word covers very different promises. Some plans only cover a broker that goes out of business; others add time limits or exclude disputed loads. Our page on recourse vs non-recourse factoring lists the questions that pin it down.

By situation

The best factoring company depends on your situation

Same reminder as above: we may be paid for referrals to our factoring partner. These picks only use what each company publishes, and each one tells you what to ask before you sign.

You need fuel money at pickup

OTR Solutions publishes the clearest numbers here: up to 50% of linehaul before delivery, with the advance fee spelled out. Apex publishes fuel credit lines for qualifying clients, and TBS a fuel advance program.

Ask: Ask how fast the advance lands and what it costs per load.

You want non-recourse cover

Apex, OTR Solutions, TBS and Triumph each publish a non-recourse option. That's where the comparison starts, not where it ends.

Ask: Ask what non-payment reasons are covered and for how many days.

Your MC is new

Apex publishes a startup program, and OTR Solutions says it doesn't run a credit check on carriers. Brokers' credit matters more than yours at most factors.

Ask: Ask whether the rate changes after your first 6 or 12 months.

You don't want to be locked in

TBS publishes no long-term commitment on its non-recourse plan. Bobtail publishes a 90-day trial before its long-term contract starts.

Ask: Ask for the term, the notice window and the exit fee in writing.

You want money the same hour

Triumph publishes instant payments to its own debit account, OTR Solutions an instant option around the clock, and Apex instant or overnight funding by option.

Ask: Ask what instant funding costs per transfer.

You run many brokers and many trucks

Volume earns lower rates nearly everywhere. Get two or three quotes on the same month of invoices and compare the yearly cost, minimums included.

Ask: Ask whether you must factor every invoice or can choose.

Switching

How to switch factoring companies later

Choosing a factor isn't forever, but leaving one takes planning. This is a plain overview, not legal advice; your contract decides the details.

  1. 1. Read your exit terms. Find the contract term, the notice window and any termination fee. Some contracts renew on their own if you miss the window.
  2. 2. Give written notice on time. Send it the way the contract says, and keep proof that it arrived.
  3. 3. Settle open invoices. Invoices already sold stay with the old factor until brokers pay. Some new factors offer to buy out that balance.
  4. 4. Get the release letter. The old factor tells your brokers it no longer owns your invoices. Without it, brokers keep paying the old company.
  5. 5. Send the new notice of assignment. The new factor notifies each broker where to pay from now on. Check the first few payments land in the right place.

Most switching problems come from steps 4 and 5 happening out of order, which leaves a broker unsure who to pay and your money stuck in between. Line up both before you haul the first load under the new factor.

Timing helps too. Many carriers switch at the start of a quiet week, so fewer invoices are in the air while brokers update their records. Tell your dispatcher before the change so the paperwork on new loads goes to the right place from day one. Ask the new factor for a short written summary of where brokers should pay and which open invoices it bought, and keep it with your load records. And keep copies of the release letter and every notice of assignment: if a payment goes astray months later, those two letters are what settle it.

If you're still deciding whether to factor at all, start with the costs on our factoring rates page.

Notes / FAQ

Questions about choosing a factor

Note 01Do factoring companies offer fuel cards?

Many do. Every company on this page publishes some kind of fuel program, from a discount card to a cash advance against the load before delivery. They aren't the same thing. A card saves cents per gallon at partner stops; an advance puts money in your hands at pickup, usually for a fee. Ask which one you're getting and what each costs.

Note 02Are factoring reviews reliable?

Treat them as a starting point. Review sites mix carriers who read the contract with carriers who didn't, and a factor with thousands of clients will always have angry ones. Look for patterns: the same complaint about reserves, chargebacks or exit fees showing up again and again is worth more than the star rating. Then check the contract for that exact clause.

Note 03How do I compare factoring quotes?

Put each quote on the same invoice. Take a typical load, apply the fee, the advance, any per-transfer charges and the fee for the funding speed you'd really use, and see what lands in your account and when. Then add the yearly items: minimums, termination fees and how long you're locked in. The lowest headline rate often isn't the cheapest year.

Note 04Do factoring companies charge hidden fees?

Most extra fees aren't hidden; they're in the contract and easy to miss. Trade press lists ACH and wire charges, same-day funding fees, credit check fees, monthly minimums and termination fees as the usual extras. Ask for a full fee schedule in writing before you sign, and ask what happens in a month you don't factor anything at all.

Note 05Which factoring companies accept new MCs?

Many factors work with new authorities, because they judge the broker's credit more than yours. On this page, Apex publishes a startup program and OTR Solutions says it doesn't run a credit check on carriers. Others may approve new MCs without saying so on their site. Ask directly, and ask whether the rate changes once your MC is older.
